Julian Cusack

Managing Agency Chair 

The founding Director of Aspen Insurance Holdings Ltd where he was CFO from 2002 until 2007 and CEO of Aspen’s Bermudian subsidiary from 2002 until 2011. Other executive roles including Group CRO. He retired as an Executive in March 2014, but continues as Non-Executive Chairman of Aspen’s UK insurance subsidiary. Julian was Group FD at Wellington Underwriting Agency from 1996 to 2002. He was a Non-Executive Director and Chairman of the audit committee of Hardy Underwriting Bermuda Limited from December 2007 until July 2012.

David Ibeson

Group Chief Executive Officer

David is the Group Chief Executive Officer of Apollo and has led the business since 2012. He has over 30 years of industry experience.

Prior to Apollo, David was the CEO of Catlin Syndicate, Catlin UK and Wellington Underwriting Agency. David has been a Non-Executive Director of DUAL International Ltd since 2016 and is Deputy Chair of the Lloyd’s of London Foundation.

James Slaughter

Group Chief Underwriting Officer

James has over 25 years’ experience across the Lloyd’s and international (re)insurance industry.

James joined Apollo in 2021 to lead our Group underwriting strategy. Prior to this he was CUO of Liberty Mutual’s Global Risk Solutions business unit overseeing more than £17bn in gross written premium.

James has experience with high level sophisticated technology, advanced analytics, and innovative underwriting solutions. Most recently he was the CUO at a top 5 global P&C company. He is a fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute and holds an MBA from Imperial College, London. James is passionate about sharing thought leadership and intelligence on the future of underwriting and data across our market and for the benefit of our clients’ needs.

Simon White

Chief Claims Officer

Simon has over 35 years of lead claims experience over multiple insurance and reinsurance classes Lloyd’s market.

Formerly a member of the LMA Catastrophe Committee and an elected member of the LMA Claims Committee. Simon participated in Said Business school LMA leadership program, and Ashridge Business school strategy and finance program. Simon was a founding member of Apollo in 2009 and is a Director of Apollo Syndicate Management Limited.

Vinay Mistry

Group Chief Risk Officer

Vinay started his career in Insurance in 2003 after experience in the investment banking industry. Prior to this Vinay graduated with an undergraduate degree in Geography and Masters in Climate Change. Vinay’s Insurance career began with the Aviva Group before moving to the Lloyd’s Corporation where he undertook Exposure Management, Capital Assessment, and Ratings/Investor Relations roles, before moving to AEGIS London to perform as Head of Capital Management and later as Head of Operations. Following this Vinay embarked on his first Director and CRO position at SCOR/Channel in 2015. Vinay joined Apollo in 2019 and leads the Risk, Actuarial and Compliance functions as core business areas that help to deliver the long term vision and strategy. Furthermore, Vinay sits on our Board of Directors and is one of the executive sponsors for ESG within the business and is Apollo’s Diversity and Inclusion Champion.

Taryn McHarg

Group Chief Financial Officer

Taryn joined Apollo in June 2022 bringing with her more than 2 decades of global insurance and financial services experience across markets including Australia, UK, Asia and the US. Her focus has been on driving operational performance through financial insights. Taryn is a Chartered Accountant and holds an Executive MBA from AGSM (University of NSW).

Hayley Spink

Group Chief Operating Officer

Hayley joined Apollo in May 2021 as Chief Operating Officer. Hayley has over 20 years’ management experience in the insurance and financial industry. Prior to joining Apollo, she was most recently interim Head of Operations at Lloyd’s, leading its business services and working strategy. Hayley has also served in several senior positions within Lloyd’s since 2007, including Head of Global Operations, Director of Lloyd’s Brexit Programme and Programme Manager of Lloyd’s China Insurance Company. In addition, between 2000 and 2007, she worked at HSBC, where she managed the operational strategies across various departments.

Jamie MacDiarmid

Finance Director

Jamie MacDiarmid, ACA, joined Apollo in June 2014, from Hardy Underwriting Bermuda Limited where he was Group Finance Director since 2003. He was also a director of a number of Hardy subsidiary companies, including the Lloyd’s managing agent. Prior to Hardy, Jamie worked in the audit practices of KPMG and Neville Russell, specialising in the Lloyd’s and London Market insurance sector. Jamie is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Jamie oversees Apollo’s finance function, which comprises Corporate Finance, Syndicate Finance and Financial Planning and Analysis, and the Internal Audit function. Jamie is Chairman of Apollo’s Finance Committee and sits on the board of Apollo Syndicate Management Limited.

Sally Peace

Chief of Staff and HR Director

Sally Peace, BSc, ACII, has been working in the Insurance Market for 30 years, most of that time spent within the Lloyd’s arena. Sally has had a variety of roles including managing the actuarial team at Wellington Underwriting before leading business planning, reinsurance placement and catastrophe modelling. Sally held an Operational role in Catlin before her move to business planning in Aspen and then to Apollo in July 2012. At Apollo Sally is Chief of Staff and HRD, leading and delivering on the people and inclusive culture strategy for Apollo. Sally also is instrumental in leading strategic projects for Apollo which have consisted of establishing the Managing Agency. Sally is a member of our ASML executive team.

Peter Bowden

Head of Compliance and Company Secretary

Peter Bowden, ACII, joined Apollo in 2018 as Deputy Head of Compliance and was promoted to Head of Compliance and Company Secretary in 2021. Peter is responsible for ensuring the wide ranging regulatory and legal requirements the business faces are met, as well as maintaining effective relationships with our regulators and in doing so leads a growing team of five compliance professionals at Apollo. Previously Peter worked at XL Catlin in the Compliance department with impressive progression during his service. Peter has worked in Compliance in the Insurance Market since 2011. Peter is a member of the Executive committee, the Company Secretary for our Managing Agent Board and is also the Chair of the Conduct group.

Andrew Gray

Managing Director, Strategic Partner Syndicates

Andrew joined Apollo in 2017 as Head of Compliance & Company Secretary following 15 years at Catlin. Prior to that, Andrew worked at Crowe Syndicate Management Limited and Lloyd’s of London.  Andrew has over 25 years’ experience in the Lloyd’s and London Market and has a wealth of governance,  regulatory and operational expertise. In February 2021 Andrew became Director of Strategic Partner Syndicates, leading the strategy and delivery of Apollo’s third party syndicate management offering.  Andrew is a member of the Apollo Executive Committee and an Associate of the CII.

Farah Buckley 

Non-Executive Director

Previously the Head of Investment Solutions at asset manager Hermes GPE and the Head of UK at Adveq, the Swiss private equity investor, Farah has spent over 20 years working in financial services across audit, mergers and acquisitions and private equity. Farah is a Non-Executive Director and Chair of Audit Committee at Aurora Investment Trust plc and a board adviser to technology start-up Grafterr. Farah is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales having gained her ACA qualification at Deloitte.

Sian Hill

Non-Executive Director

Sian is a chartered accountant with extensive experience of the banking and insurance sectors. Sian has spent the majority of her career at KPMG, becoming a tax partner in 1996, specialising in the financial services sector. In recent years she focused on the insurance market, working with a wide range of international insurance and reinsurance groups, intermediaries and Lloyd’s market participants. Sian is also a non-executive director of Yealand Fund Services Limited, Suffolk Building Society and Cordiant Digital Infrastructure Limited, and a trustee of Place2Be, a leading UK children’s mental health charity.

Martin Hudson

Non-Executive Director

Previously CEO of Travelers International businesses from 2002 to 2009. Co-founded the Acappella Syndicate, and then became CUO for Mitsui Sumitomo’s Lloyd’s business from 2011 to 2015. Subsequently CEO for Old Mutual’s specialty insurance business in London.

Stuart is a partner of Keyhaven Capital Partners, a private equity business. He is also Chairman of the Elseco MGA. He was previously Group CEO of Canopius and CEO of Aegis London. Stuart is a chartered accountant.

Nick Jones

Founder, Chief Reinsurance Officer, and Director of Underwriting Oversight

In 2009 Nick was a founding member of Apollo and secured the initial Lloyd’s approval and capital support for Syndicate 1969. Prior to Apollo, Nick was formerly the Active Underwriter of Heritage Syndicate 1200 & Executive Director of Heritage Managing Agency leaving shortly after Argo acquired the business. Prior to that, Nick spent the first 10 years of his career at Faraday (formerly DP Mann) Syndicate 435 underwriting the D&F property class of business. Nick is a former Chair and Deputy Chair of the LMA Worldwide Property Panel. Nick is ACII qualified and holds a BSc Hons degree from the University of Manchester.

Toby Westcott

Non-Executive Director

Toby is a member of Apollo Group Holdings Limited Board following Alchemy’s significant capital backing in 2021.

Toby is a Partner at Alchemy, having joined from Hawkpoint Partners where he specialised in mergers and acquisitions in the financial services sector, advising Alchemy on several transactions. He was previously in Corporate Finance at Grant Thornton.

He has a degree in Mathematics from the University of Warwick and is a Chartered Accountant.

James Hays

Corporate Founder

James Hays is Vice Chairman of Brown & Brown, Inc., a member of its Board of Directors, and the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Hays Companies, a wholly owned subsidiary of Brown & Brown. Since 1994, Jim has guided Hays Companies as the Minneapolis-based insurance broker developed into a nationwide leader in risk management, P&C, employee benefits, and personal lines insurance. Brown & Brown acquired Hays Companies in 2018. As CEO of Hays Companies, Jim has overseen 25+ years of growth, starting from a seven-person operation to a large-scale firm with more than 700 teammates in 30 offices. On top of his leadership responsibilities, Jim maintains relationships with key accounts, helping customers understand their risk profile and developing robust insurance solutions. Before forming Hays, Jim was a senior executive officer at Rollins Burdick Hunter. A graduate of the University of Minnesota (B.S. and finance MBA), Jim currently serves on the boards of JS Held, Skyward Specialty Insurance Company, and Mid Country Acquisition Corp. Jim is involved in collectibles, and enjoys golf, travel, and space artifacts. He lives in Miami Beach

Angus Winther

Non-Executive Director

Angus has more than 30 years’ experience in the financial services and the insurance sector. He was a founding partner of Lexicon Partners, the London based investment banking advisory business that was acquired by Evercore in 2011, and served as a senior adviser at Evercore until 2016. He was previously a partner at Phoenix Securities after beginning his career at Chase Manhattan Bank. He is currently a non-executive director of Ecclesiastical Insurance Office plc and its parent Benefact Group plc, and was previously a non-executive director of Hiscox Syndicates Limited.
